Equine Services

Using vaccination, deworming, dental care and nutrition to maintain good health in equine patients.

We offer a wide variety of equine services through our mobile veterinary units. Our diagnostic services include conventional radiography, ultrasonography, and endoscopic imaging. We are fully equipped with equine dentistry tools and can perform mobile performance floats as well as corrective work. Lameness exams, consults, and equine pre-purchase exams are also available. Please contact us for any additional questions or advice on our medical services.

Why does my horse need a veterinary checkup?

Horses need at least one veterinary evaluation each year, while older animals need bi-annual exams. Having routine exams can keep your horse's health on the right track. With each visit, the veterinarian can provide preventative care, detect illnesses and provide treatment. Horses need vaccinations and deworming to stay healthy, which is one of the many services we offer our patients. We provide Rabies, Tetanus, Western Encephalitis, and West Nile Virus vaccinations which are generally given in the spring and boosted in the fall.

Parasitic worms can cause health issues for your horse, so it is important to have a strict deworming routine. These worms often affect the digestive tract (small intestines) and can cause medical issues as they increase in numbers. All horses are different, and our veterinarians will determine how often they should be dewormed.

Dental care is also performed during veterinary visits. Taking care of your horse's teeth will ensure they can ingest their food properly without pain. To schedule a veterinary checkup for your horse, please call us at 403-932-5875.

What are signs that my animal is sick?

Please contact our team immediately whenever you notice abnormal behaviour or signs of illness and/or pain. We provide emergency services for large animals after hours that show the following signs of illness:

  • Diarrhea
  • Discharge from eyes and nose
  • Bucking and bolting
  • Dry skin or coat
  • Stiffness
  • Reluctance to do usual activities
  • Head shaking
  • Spilling food from their mouth

What should I feed my horse?

A varied diet can improve your animal's quality of life. There are six essential nutrients that should make up their diet: carbohydrates (cellulose is found in hay and grass), protein (amino acids to build muscle and promote healthy skin, bone, and hair), fats (a good source of energy), minerals, water (10-15 gallons per day based on their size), vitamins, and minerals. We recommend that horses be fed the following:

  1. Hay
  2. Small grains such as corn, barley, or oats
  3. Grass/pastures (allows daily exercise)
  4. Supplements as recommended by a veterinarian
  5. Commercial grain

Our team can assist with establishing a feeding schedule and how much your animal should be eating daily.
