Bloodwork Services for Pets

Analyzing your pet’s blood to detect illnesses and establish a treatment plan.

There is nothing worse than having to wait a week to get your results after having laboratory tests. At Cochrane Animal Clinic, we understand that waiting for answers is stressful. For this reason, we are proud to offer in-clinic blood tests that are processed while you wait. Whether your pet needs a complete blood cell count (CBC) or a comprehensive chemistry panel, results are usually available within thirty minutes. To schedule bloodwork for your pet, please call us at 403-932-5875.

What is a complete blood count?

CBC measures the amount of white and red blood cells, platelet counts, and the shape or size of the blood cells. With this information, our veterinarians can detect anemia, immune response, infections, blood clotting ability, and hydration status. Sometimes a chemistry test may also be conducted to provide additional information. A blood chemistry test provides information related to organ function, enzymes, and electrolyte levels.

Why is bloodwork recommended for cats and dogs?

Most often, bloodwork is used to diagnose a symptom, however, there are other occasions where bloodwork is recommended:

  1. Your pet is about to start a new medication
  2. They have an upcoming surgery that requires anesthesia
  3. To identify their normal/baseline health levels

How is blood taken from my pet?

Our team is trained to make the process easy and comfortable for your pet. A blood sample will be taken from a vein in their neck or leg. They feel a pinch, but it is over before they know it. Our veterinarians will discuss the results in detail with you and make recommendations for the next steps.
